FAQ
Q: What is VIU2?
A: VIU² is a compact “mobile” security camera that supports event notifications such as motion detection and sound detection trough SMS and/or e-mail. It also enables you to stream live and recorded video from anywhere to your mobile phone, PDA, PC simply by using the best available mobile network (UMTS, HSDPA, 3G, GPRS, …)
Q: What’s they viewing angle of the camera?
A: 80 degrees.
Q: The button on the camera for the event detection enabling/disabling, is there a notification somewhere when this button is used?
A: By default, event detection is disabled. Enabling event detection can be done via web interface, sms or the button on the camera itself. You will receive a notification sms whenever this setting is toggled (regardless of how it was toggled). When master user enables event notification (either by sms, trough the web interface or by pressing the camera button), the event notification LED will light up.
Q: Indication 2G, 3G, EDGE, …?
A: It is possible to check what kind of connection is available on web interface all the time. At start-up of the device and sms is sent to you with a summary of the signal status within approx. 1,5 minutes. VIU2 also includes an LED, which gives a simplified signal strength indication.
Q: What about speed of the live stream when camera is in 2G?
A: It will have the same speed as in 3G, the only difference is a lower resolution and frame rate.
Q: Can I use this product for my home or business security/surveillance?
A: Absolutely, this product is perfect for your normal home or business security/ surveillance needs.
Q: Can you really use this from across the world?
A: Of course! Contrary to most other “mobile broadband” cameras, this one can be reached from anywhere you have a working internet connection. Just visit www.my-viu.com for World Wide Web access, or by mobile phone.
Q: Does this unit come with audio?
A: Yes. The built-in mono-cardioid microphone provides both noise detection and audio in live streams and recorded clips
Q: Do you connect cables from the camera outside to your computer or is it cordless?
A: This camera is (almost completely) wireless. All you need is a power source.
Q: How and where can the settings of the VIU2 be changed?
A: Either by sms commands or web interface
Q: What is the internal memory going to be used for?
A: The video clip and snapshot associated with the last detected event is stored in the device’s internal memory (internal memory is cleared upon reboot).
Q: Can it store picture/videos and sound?
A: Yes
Q: Can extra memory be added?
A: Yes, VIU2 has a micro-SD card reader which supports up to 32GB storage. Furthermore, the VIU2 sports an additional USB port that can be used to hook up any USB mass storage class compliant device (from simple memory sticks to huge external hard drives).
Q: Does it need any software installation?
A: No. VIU² has been developed so that everybody (even without technical background) can stream live video. VIU² is what we call – Plug’n’Play.
Q: Which frequency bands for 3G are available?
A: VIU2 as a standard is a dual band 900/2100 MHz.
Q: Can VIU2 be used outside?
A: VIU2 is built for indoor usage, but you can of course install the camera behind a window to keep an eye on your outdoor properties as well. Please mind your countries privacy laws though, as filming public spaces without notification can be illegal in your jurisdiction.
Q: Can I mount VIU2 on the wall?
A: Of course…VIU2 is shipped with a flexible stand that can both be standing or hung. Screws and plugs included as well
Q: How does the owner of VIU2 get notified if an event is detected?
A: Users that have event notification enabled will receive an sms and/or e-mail when a so-called “event” is detected (an event can be any of the following: movement, noise, loss of mains power, low battery state, restoring of mains power), within less than 30 seconds.
Q: How much light does it need to be in the room for VIU2 to record?
A: The camera’s sensor is rated at 0,01 lux
Q: VIU2 supports low light support. What does it mean that VIU2 has 0.01 LUX?
A: Lux is SI unit of illuminance measuring luminance per area. 0,01 lux roughly equals the amount of light you get during a night illuminated by a quarter moon.
Q: Is it easy to install VIU2?
A: Yes, VIU² is plug and play. Plug in the 3G dongle, power cable, power on and send the sms command “init”. After that, you are master user and can start live streaming or use any of the other functions the device offers.
Q: What is frames per second (FPS)?
A: The frames per second (fps) is a measurement of how many pictures are displayed during one second. The human eye is unable to perceive distinct pictures when it is presented with more than 24 pictures per second. TV broadcasts are transmitted in 25fps (30fps in NTSC countries).
Q: How much video can the VIU2 store? How big a hard drive do I need?
A: VIU2 records to a micro-SD card or external hard drive if connected. Every second of recorded video will take about 350 kilobits on the hard drive (roughly 32 Kbytes), that's approximately 2 MBytes per minute, or 120 MB per hour. To record a full day of 24 hours you will need slightly less than 3GB of storage space. However, this is for continuous recording. Since the VIU2 will only record video when an event (motion, sound or power failure) is detected, the actual usage will be significantly lower.
Q: VIU2 has AAC Audio Compression. What does that mean?
A: AAC is short for Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) which is a standardized, lossy compression and encoding scheme for digital audio. Designed to be the successor of the MP3 format, AAC generally achieves better sound quality than MP3 at similar bit rates.
Q: VIU2 uses H.264 Video compression. What is that?
A: H.264 (MPEG-4 Part 10 or AVC (Advanced Video Coding)) is a standard for video compression, and is currently one of the most commonly used formats for the recording, compression, and distribution of high definition video.
Q: Do I need to use a specific web-browser to look at the pictures/videos?
A: Not at all, Option supports open standards and therefore we work hard to ensure ALL standard web-browser in the market are compatible.
Q: VIU2, includes a battery. How long is the battery life?
A: VIU2 is shipped with a re-chargeable battery (1410mAh), which functions as a back up if no power available. This battery supports up to 2 hours of streaming.
Q: If power is unplugged, will VIU2 automatically start to use the battery?
A: Yes
Q: What is the delay of the image viewed on my phone/browser compared to the actual image?
A: This depends on the viewer and type of internet connection that you’re using, but a fairly good average that we’ve measured in real life situations is 7seconds.
Q: Can I remotely zoom in on a certain part of the picture?
A: There is no optical zoom available (meaning, lens will not zoom in or out by remote access nor direct access. VIU2 has a fixed focus lens.
Q: What is the resolution of the camera?
A: 640x480 pixels
Q: What is the internal memory of VIU2?
A: It has an internal memory of 16MB, which equals 5 minutes (highest quality) of recording.
Q: How long will it take from VIU2 to note a detection until the user is notified?
A: The notification is sent out straight away, but the time that it takes to arrive at the user depends on the speed of the network. Typically though, we can safely assume that a user is notified within 30 seconds of detection.
Q: What kind of mobile/smart phone do I need to have in order to be able to view my camera?
A: All mobile phones that have a streaming media player (Real player on Nokia, Packet Video on Sony-Ericsson, ...). All mobile phones that support mobile YouTube without the need for a special app.
Q: What is included in the standard package?
A: camera, foot/wallmount, 2 screws, power adapter, USB modem and server client access license.
Q: If more than one device is streaming video simultaneously, will the quality be reduced?
A: No, this is another great feature with VIU2. Option has added a server between the camera and the devices, which will ensure that each user who is streaming will have the optimal streaming quality that his/her platform can handle. So there will be no quality loss if there are multiple users streaming at the same time, nor will the bandwidth requirement on the camera’s side increase.
Q: Do I need to have PC in order to use VIU2?
A: No. VIU2 can be used (watch event detection, receive event notification (sms or e-mail), watch live stream…) by your mobile phone, PC, PDA, and Tablet. It’s perfectly possible to configure your VIU2 by sms or by web interface.
Q: By looking at the VIU2 is it possible to see what signal strength it has?
A: Yes. The Signal strength LED (second LED when you look at the VIU2 and start counting from the left towards the right) will indicate by color what your signal strength is. White = HSDPA or more, Orange is EDGE or 3G, red is GPRS or lower.

Q: Why does the camera LED on the VIU2 sometimes turn red?
A: The red light indicated that the VIU2 is currently streaming or recording video, this indication is required by law in a lot of countries. The VIU2 does support a “discreet” mode which turns all LED’s off, but it’s availability depends on the legal requirements in your jurisdiction.
Q: Do I need a special SIM-card for the VIU2 to work?
A: Any SIM-card with data subscription and that supports sms will work with the VIU2. Note that if you use a pre-paid SIM, you need to make sure that your dataSIM billing is based on volume and not on time (ie, you pay per kb that you use, not per minute that you’re connected).
Q: VIU2 includes a Micro-SD Card reader. Where can I find this?
A: This is placed behind the rechargeable battery. In order to insert a Micro-SD card, please first remove the battery.

Q: If you record for 1min, how big is that recording file?
A: This depends on the available bandwidth that your VIU” has (HSDPA, UMTS, 3G, Edge, …). In the worst case scenario (best video quality), 1 minute of recorded video will use about 5Mb of disk space. Thus 1GB available space for recording will give you around 200 minutes of recorded video.
Q: What is the size/weight of VIU2?
A: VIU2 is developed to be as small and lightweight as possible. Dimension: Without Base: 130 x 105 x 26 mm / With Base (standing): 160 x 105 x 26 mm. Weight: Without Base: 180gr / With Base: 330gr.
